Process Safety and Environmental Protection Special Issue:

Process Safety on Utilization of Emerging Energy

About the Journal

Process Safety and Environmental Protection iis an international journal with a broad scope on the safety of industrial processes and the protection of the environment. Papers that deal with new developments in safety or environmental aspects, demonstrating how research results can be used in process engineering design and practice, are particularly encouraged. Experimental or theoretical research work bringing new perspectives to established principles, highlighting unsolved problems or indicating directions for future research will also be considered. The journal is especially interested in contributions that extend the boundaries of traditional engineering as well as in multidisciplinary papers.

The evolution of energy systems has always been a major contributing factor to improve quality of life. Emerging energy sources, such as hydrogen, solar, wind and battery, seem to be promising to provide reliable and clean energy in the near future. Safety remains to be a significant challenge during the production, storage, transportation and utilization of these emerging energies. Understanding the risk and developing safe techniques is imperative to utilize these emerging energy sources, demanding process safety research on relevant areas. This special issue aims to present recent progress on the risk assessment and safety techniques in the life cycle of emerging energy sources. Potential topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Consequence analysis of hydrogen release: vapor dispersion, explosion and fire
  • Control and mitigation techniques of hydrogen release
  • Risk assessment of hydrogen station, production and storage facilities
  • Route optimization of hydrogen transportation
  • Safety of automobile powered by hydrogen fuel cells
  • Inherently safer design of battery
  • Thermal hazard of battery
  • Solar electrical safety and assessment
  • Wind turbine safety
  • Risk assessment for producing solar and wind energy
  • Incident case studies related to emerging energy
